Completed! My router at home is perfect for the
3 permanently connected PC's in the house and
even caters for "guests" who bring along
laptops. It would come nowhere near satisfying
the needs of even a small company, let alone the
International Corporate I work for, where
downtime brings manufacturing, sales and
distribution to a standstill and costs millions.

[1] Class A. Any number of hosts over 65, 534
requires a Class A network.
[2] Network 127 is reserved. Messages are not
transmitted out but back to the transmitting
machine. It is a short way for a host to refer
to itself.
[3] You would need to register an IP address.
You can get an IP address from an ISP or, if you
need a large block of addresses, you could apply
to either APNIC, ARIN or RIPE NCC. The registry
then assigns the network portion of the IP
address to the company.
[4] 255 is reserved for broadcasts. Neither the
network address or the host may be 255.

[1] The webmaster could acquire a domain name
from an ISP or a domain name registrar. The
address may then be something like
www.lostmine.com
[2] [www.africaregistry.com] - .CO price for $15
per year and .za at $47 per year.
[www.cozahost.com] - Cozahost domain name
registration is R 249.00 for initial
registration and the setup of your home page.
Annual renewal is R 175.00 per year after the
first year, ie starting in 2012. The central
domain name authorities charge a fixed and
constant price for domain name registration.
This means that there is a flat fee payable for
.co.za domain registrations, and a flat fee for
.com domain name registrations, and so on.
[www.marblehost.com] - Marble Host offers free
domain name registration. You will get a free
domain with any web hosting plan!
[3] The least expensive option would be to have
your web hosting company register your domain
name as many offer this as a free service when
you host with them. The most expensive option
would be through the registrar.

[1] A satellite connection would be ideal in
this situation. The dish antenna is small enough
to be portable to the various locations she has
to go to and no cabling would be required.
[2] The web developer would do well with a cable
connection. He has cable TV already and the
connection speed would suit his needs.
[3] I would recommend DSL for the small office
consultant. With DSL you have both the voice and
data and are connected 24/7. The consultant
could select the line speed and upgrade when/if
required, at a later stage.

[2A] Routers pass packets of data to other
routers on other networks. The data is broken
into smaller packets of data and sent via
various paths. The packets of data are
reassembled into the original data once they
reach their destination.
[2B] TCP protocol governs how packets are
assembled and disassembled, and how they are
verified as intact by the receiver. IP is
responsible for getting packets to their correct
destination.
[2C] The first two numbers of an IP address
identify the network on which the host resides
and the numbers thereafter identify the host
itself.
[2D] Hardware, including modems, cables etc.
Software, including a TCP/IP stack, web browser
or FTP client. Addresses, network accounts or
both, valid IP addresses for the gateway, domain
name server and a network address for the
computer you are going to connect.

The browser first displays any text on the page
and then displays the hits. This is usually
based on "best fit" first, so Wikipedia is the
very first hit. There were about 37000 results
for Vannevar Bush hypertext, and it took 23
seconds to display.
During this time, the search engine sent out
crawlers to find matches to the search request
and, as the results were returned, so they
displayed on the page.

[3A] The browser transmits the URL over the
internet using HTTP protocol. The web server
examines the URL and searches for the web page
or file that was requested by the browser. When
the server finds the requested item/s it sends
them back to the host running the browser that
made the request.
[3B] Web pages can contain text, images,
buttons, sound, animation, text entry boxes and
video, although web pages are just plain text
files.
[3C] The browser downloads the file from its
storage location and caches it on the users
local storage. The browser reads the file from
cache into memory and, based on the HTML
instructions, creates a model in memory of how
the page will look. The model is called a
document object. The browser determines what
additional files need to be downloaded to
display the page and begins downloading these
files into cache. (eg. images, applets). The
browser notes any special content that may
affect how the age behaves, formatting tags,
image sizes, scrips, plug-ins or applets. If any
scripts need to run before the page is
displayed, the browser runs them. The browser
begins to display the page contents once the
scripts have finished running.
[3D] If the request is for a web page to be
downloaded,the server retrieves the file and
formats it as an http response. If the request
is for a server application to run, the server
runs the application.
[3E] As software processes that run as server
extensions to the server software and as
applications or server-side scripts that use CGI
to communicate with web clients.

[1] One of my all time favourite really crappy
sites is [webpagesthatsuck.smugmug.com] and yes,
Vincent Flanders has been publishing Web Pages
that Suck for many years. Another absolute
pearler is [anselme.homestead.com]. There was a
site dedicated to religion that I seen unable to
track down again that was so colourful it made
my eyes hurt to try and look at it.
[2] The problems with all these sites is "total
overkill"
[3] The negative impact is that users are simply
overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information,
not to mention distracted by everything
flashing, blinking and moving.
[4] I don't think there is any salvation to be
had for either of the sites listed above, not
without starting from scratch and choosing
cleaner looking sites and limiting content
substantially.

[1] My connection is fairly fast and when I
click on search items immediately start to load.
Once again wikipedia hits load first with other
search results, I assume in order of %
relevance, afterwards. The client site simply
starts to display the hits as they are found.
[2] Viewing the source code gives a fair sample
of what was happening on the server side. It
appears that many servers are involved. There
can be delays for many reasons. Recalling a few
months ago when our seacom cable went down being
a prime example. International browsing slowed
to a crawl, if it was available at all.
[3] The client side only displays what the user
needs to see. Your order is sent to the server
which records your purchases in a database. It
is entirely possible that more than one server
is involved, especially when there is an
exchange of money, for security and privacy
reasons, if nothing else. Delays in placement of
an order could be as a result of the server busy
and/or the server validating you and ensuring
the order is being assigned to the correct
client.
[4] Shockwave flash files are run on the client
side, the server checks to make sure you have
the plug-in installed. If you do not, you
receive an advisory suggesting you download it,
usually with a direct link to download. If the
plug-in is already installed, the file starts to
run. In the case of webcam sites, the webcam is
set to display in a block on a webpage with a
refresh rate defined by the webmaster. On the
MP3 site, the client makes the choice on whether
they wish to view video/music.

Web site administrators are responsible for
maintaining the stability and security of web
servers, as well as general administration tasks
like setting up user permissions and access,

take responsibility for ensuring the server is
accessible and safe. Our web site administrators
use analysis tools to check performance issues

[2] Images as links with no text - so you
have to roll-over the image to find out
where it is going to take you. Over-use of

Pages with little or no content are just as
bad. I never want to see an "under

page is not ready, remove the link to it
until such time as it is.

The advantage of having a new window open is
that users may not come back or even
remember that they were at your site to
begin with. The disadvantage of this is that
users tend to rely on "back" button to
navigate but when a new window opens, there
is no history for the browser to go back to.

Not that we have got to style sheets yet,
but css is the much better alternative.
Changes to formatting are then global within
the site, rather than having to edit each
page individually. Not a lot of fun when you
have a 100 page website

Using shades of colour makes readability
easier and gives a more pleasant look to an
otherwise boring list.
Tables can be used to divide one composite
image into many parts and realign them as
image maps, as well as to lay out webpages.
The more recent use of divs for webpage
layout is far better, even if a bit more
fiddly.

Select options for product lists or regions,
radio buttons for either/or male/female,
permanent/contractor and request feedback.
It is quite difficult to say but ...
Although each form may require all elements
to be used, I would think the most commonly
used element is radio buttons. In any form
where you have a set of perhaps 20 questions
that require you to select one - eg never,
sometimes, often, always - there will be 20
sets of buttons. Many companies send out
electronic surveys to staff and customers in
this format.

I cannot think of any scenario where this

[www.rodcdavis.com] just simply has to be an
example of one of the worst websites I have
ever seen. There is no standard navigation
and when you view the code, there are no
type styles. Each and every single page has
different backgrounds, navigation and fonts.
My favourite .... the entry page is not
called Rod C Davis - it is called index ...
#fail. I find it quite fascinating that so
many "religious" sites are simply this bad.
I would probably start from scratch with a
brand new style sheet to at least keep the
font styles and background consistent. There
is so much work that needs to be done here
that it defies belief.

Activity 2-1
The paragraph with the class="nav" will
display orange because p.div has a
specificity of 11 whereas p only has a
specificity of 1. The
elements display orange because the
class="main" has been applied to them. The
row containing class="head" will display in
darker gray.
Activity 2-2
The styles are the same for both subheadings
because they are both defined by
element. To change the the style for
"Nothing New" without affecting the styles
for the "Other News" heading you would
create a style; eg. h2.somename and add the
class="somename" to the heading Nothing New.
Yes, the two subheadings do display
different styles.
Newsparrot displays in orange because the
class="parrot" overrides the existing rule
for
The individual names will only display in
orange if we apply the same class to them.

The imported style is considered more local
than the linked style sheet because it is an

The style in the linked style sheet would
display because it takes precedence over the

I would use the cascade in situations where
perhaps a department wants/needs a different
style to the global style. The type of style
sheet I would use most often is the global
style sheet because this would be used in
every project. The selectors that would be
used most often would be classes, IDs and
contextual selectors as these are all that
is required, for the most part, to empower
the style sheets.

So there is just about everything wrong with
this site that you could imagine but,
sticking with the subject of box properties,
the least they could have done was use some
padding and margins! This page is simply way
too busy and doesn't have much in the way of
white space anywhere, apart from at the top,
which only serves to make an already long
page even longer :-(

You would use both, but positioning allows
you to create more complex precise layouts.
The use of fixed or fluid layout will be
dependent upon the project under
development. Personally I prefer fluid
layouts because of the differences in
browser sizes and I hate horizontal

Hi Ahmed
I tried to visit your site but the link is not
correct. I notice there is a space between // and
the a in ahmed, so the link won't work. However, I
removed the space and managed to get there. Whenever
you want to copy a URL I always copy it from the
address bar at the top, rather than trying to type
it out, and then paste it wherever. In any event,
that aside ....
I see that your background image is also missing.
Have you uploaded the pictures and did you upload
them into the same folder as your index.html page?
If you created an images folder (as I did) then you
would need to reference the images within that
folder and as per the example below:
Language: HTML<img src= "images/DSCF1305.JPG"
width="200" height="200">

Hi Phoenix
An email address never has http:// in it. Email from
your mylife.unisa.ac.za email account which you
should have set up.
How you do this is in your first tutorial letter
Number 5 - right at the end. This is a copy/paste.
5. Regarding a mylife email address for all Unisa
students
To use myUnisa (the official Learning Management
system for Unisa) you have to register ‘Join myUnisa’,
see [my.unisa.ac.za]
After activation of your mylife account, you may
re-direct it to your trusted/old/known email
address.
Take note - When Unisa communicates via email, it
only happens via the mylife email address. This is a
nonnegotiable Unisa rule.

My pleasure Ahmed. Perhaps you would like to rename
your page to index.html. That will load the webs
page, instead of the index page
Like this one >>> [rowena.eu5.org]
Most servers are set up so that index.html is
automatically the first page that opens.

Lesego you may have uploaded your html page using
your HTML editor but it did not upload the picture.
It isn't there. Using firefox, if you right click on
the page and go to page info and click on media, you
will see that it shows size and dimensions as 0.
Usually that window would also display the image. It
doesn't. If you have uploaded the image and put it
into a different folder than the root, that would be
another reason it is not displaying.

Content for a website should be easy enough to find.
There is enough online. I would be very careful
though to use ONLY the content. When you are given a
web project to do, your client would need to provide
you with the content for it so I don't think the
focus is that, as long as you include what you are
required to show.
Having said that, depending on the subject, your
graphics should be suitable. eg. you would never
redo the Ceres website, for example, in black and
white. Ceres being fruit juice, I would imagine
would be fruity happy colours. Just my thoughts. Ask
around and you will find plenty of people with
"something" that they have been meaning to put
online and never got around to doing. I have the
basic structure for my portfolio now in place, been
sweating over that for a few days! On to the rest of
the Lessons!

Nomfezeko-73038881 you have a few hours to update
your page and get it right. The deadline date has
changed to today, being 15th March. Your code for
the page above is 512 lines long because it has been
written in word, which has added loads of garbage to
the code. If you go to [rowena.eu5.org] and click on
View - Source, you will see that mine is only 10
lines long. You cannot write html using a word
processor. You should use notepad or Mac's
suggestion, Web Matrix, which is what I am using.
Your image is not showing because it is trying to
reference a file still sitting on your PC >>>>>
index_files/image002.jpg.
Unless you have a folder on the server called
index_files and have uploaded image002.jpg to that
folder, your picture will not load.

ElizabethMcL I am not sure what happened with your
page but when I looked at the source code I found it
is missing everything. It is not defined as an html
page. It has no head, title or body tags and no
image reference.
If you click on View - source, in the browser on
your page, you will see what I mean. Then go to my
page at [rowena.eu5.org] and do the same. Compare
the two and you will see why your page is not
displaying properly.
You have a few hours still to fix it because the
deadline has changed to today, 15th March.

Richard I got permission from a friend of mine to
use the content from her site. I am treating her
like a client and expect feedback from her. I have
to reuse certain images eg the logo and include all
the content that it currently features.
I have no doubt that since you will be doing
"something for nothing" for your employer that they
will most likely be delighted. If you can get their
buy in on your project, you could find out from them
what they require to be included, what you can toss
and so on. Good Luck!

Roelof I am not sure if I am understanding you
correctly but if you have a folder called
index_files it means you are trying to write code in
word. It doesn't work. Word automatically creates a
folder for images (usually *something*_files) and
adds hundreds of lines of garbage. You have to use a
text editor like notepad or the one that Mac
suggested in the sticky titled "New Editor" to write
html.
If your image is in the folder images on the server
then your code is wrong because it is trying to find
the image in a folder on your PC. There are loads of
posts about this on the forum.

Hi Ashiya
If you go to learning curve at
[www.learningcurve.co.za] you can get the same thing
for R2400.00. You have to supply your student number
etc and there is a process but well worth it at half
the Incredible Connection price.

Hi Fulu
The image should change when you roll your mouse
over it. If you go to my portfolio (still in
development) at [rowena.eu5.org] you will see that
if you rollover the links at the top, they change,
as does the green image below it on the page.
It was not clear whether we were to use javascript
or if we could use only CSS so I have used both. The
links along the top are CSS, whilst the green image
below on the page is javascript.

Hi wmbt
In the brief it says
Quote
at least 8 pages
and then goes on to say
Quote
add an extra page
and link to it for your Active Participation.
From the above, I would imagine that the 8 pages,
plus one for your Active Participation, is the
absolute minimum requirement. Technically, as I read
it, you should then have a minimum of at least 9
pages. I know that mine is more and am assuming that
is fine.
I was more concerned over fitting all of my active
participation on one page and questioned this. Mac
ignored me so I realised I must have missed
something and re-read the brief. It states quite
clearly that we should use a numbered list or what I
now am assuming is
Language: HTML<ol></ol>
to show this. I haven't quite finished that page
yet, but since I had already saved mine as
screenshots, edited them and saved them as .gif I am
trying to find the most logical way to put it
together. At the moment they are css popups on
rollover but I am not sure that I like how it
displays......

calls Incredible - Incredible Corruption! LOL. For
anyone wanting to buy PCs, rather use PC

You just have to watch for specials and shop around.
Incredible do actually have those from time to time.
I bought a 1T external HDD recently at R500 from

R935.00.

Hi Matomet
The alternative would be to use divs, which is how I
have done it for the same effect. I see that you
have used divs on the page but your active
participation - for example - is not sitting at the
bottom. You might need to clear: left or right or
both on your footer div and set the position of your
profile div so that it sits in the middle, under the
menu. Divs, however, can be tricksy little buggers.

Hi Matomet
Okay this is not that easy to explain but let me
try. I will not use my own entry page as an example
as I am using multiple divs to make them sit side by
side and in a specific order. I can only show how I
would do it differently...
I have stripped as much of my own code out here and
left you with the basics. You will get the idea. The
menu will not work as it is because, in order to
simplify, I have taken the css out that drives the
menu but you can change the menu to include yours.
You will see that my menu is based on an ordered
list, although I did change the links to yours
If you examine the css carefully you will see that
you need to use clear: on the footer id and well as
main id.
This is the very basic html to center it all:
Language: HTML<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<title></title>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/portfolio.css">
<style type="text/css">
<!--
-->
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div id="wrap">
<div id="header">
<!-- Top Menu -->
<div class="menu">
<ul>
<li><a href="index.html"><img src="images/Homeo.jpg"
width="80" height="25" border="0px"></li>
<li><a href="contacts.html"><img src="images/Contactso.jpg"
width="80" height="25" border="0px"></a></li>
<li><a href="advertising.html"><img src="images/Products.jpg"
width="80" height="25" border="0px"></a></li>
<li><a href="guide.html"><img src="images/Guideo.jpg"
width="80" height="25" border="0px"></a></li>
<li><a href="missionvision.html"><img src="images/Miso.jpg"
width="80" height="25" border="0px"></a></li>
<li><a href="clients.html"><img src="images/Clientso.jpg"
width="80" height="25" border="0px"></a></li>
<li><a href="email.html"><img src="images/Emailso.jpg"
width="80" height="25" border="0px"></li>
<li><a href="ouroffice.html"><img src="images/Ouroffice.jpg"
width="80" height="25" border="0px"></li>
</ul>
</div>
</div>
<div id="main">
<div class="maincontent">
<table align="center" style="width: 750px;">
<tr>
<td>This is the main content area. Just some text to
test<br>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
</div>
<div id="footer"><p>This is the footer. Just some
text to test</p></div>
</div>
</div>
</body>
</html>
This is the basic css you need to drive it. You will
no doubt want to change widths etc as it is probably
using mostly my CSS
Language: CSS#wrap {
min-height: 100%;
height: 100%;
overflow: auto;
}
#header {
margin: auto;
background-color:#134c11;
width: 760px;
height: 100px;
}
#main {
margin: 0;
background-color:white;
width:100%;
clear: both;
}
.maincontent {
margin: auto;
min-height: 550px;
width:760px;
}
#footer {
width: 100%;
height: 27px;
position: relative;
clear: both;
color: Black;
text-align:center;
z-index:0;
}
Hope this helps.

Hi Ashiya
In another post someone asked if they could delete
the page used for Assignment 1 and use it as the
home page for their portfolio and Mac answered yes.
I have only kept mine because it gives the link for
the site I am redoing. (I want it to be clear that I
have not simply copied the existing site) The answer
to your question then would be that you don't have
to even keep the page designed for the first
assignment.

Hi Euwen
I have only just seen Mac's post re the date for
portfolio being 13th May, after sending email with
my portfolio address to UNISA earlier this morning.
Will teach me for not checking here first.
Euwen, why don't you upload what you have done in
the meantime? Then all you would have to do is
upload changes on the weekend. I found it is better
to do it that way because you can pick up any
problems earlier and deal with them. eg. I found
that in a few cases some of my images contained CAPs
and in my code they were not caps and didn't display
on the site, although when I tested on my PC they
worked fine. Just a thought...

lindy it is because you have created a subfolder
within your site and put your pages in there. The
entry page needs to be in the root of the site but
instead it is inside a folder called Assignment 2

Hi lindy
You should still have separate folders for css,
javascript and image files but your index.html - at
least - should be in the root of the site. This
means that you still need to keep all your images in
a folder called images and change your code to point
to the images within the images folder.

Hi Ashiya
You could try this for your page. Use it exactly as
it is below, including the auto !important;
Language: CSS
min-height: 100%;
height: auto !important;
height: 100%;
Yes, I have used mostly percentages for my page
layout, but exact values for things like images.
I can't help you any more until I get home after
work tonight. I don't have my sites code at work
unfortunately. Try the above in the meantime for the
height.

Hi Krystle
I reread the tut letter. One page. I then saw Mac
posted as one of his replies to copy and paste and
keep in notepad to add to the page, so I have sat
for two nights now redoing my entire Active
Participation page so that it is text and not
images. I had originally used screenshots. If you
have one page, then it is right

Hi Ashiya
It is quite difficult to try and work out what might
be wrong without looking at the code and css myself,
but if the height option I posted above does not
work you can also try and use the overflow in your
css. eg:
Language: CSS
overflow:scroll;
or
Language: CSS
overflow-y:scroll;
if you only want it to scroll vertically.
Depending on what other values have been set in the
CSS, a few things could affect the way it is being
displayed.
In terms of 3 column layout, Mac suggested a URL for
assistance with this in another post at
[osprey.unisa.ac.za]
Ashiya you might also be having difficulty because
of the footer. Don't forget to clear. You can
quickly check by adding a break and setting the
clear:both on the break, in your html code, just
before your footer. In other words, add this just
before your footer ...
Language: HTML
<br style="clear:both">
Not a terribly elegant way to fix it, but it should
work. Remember that floating divs fall outside of
the normal flow of the page so the page doesn't know
how long they are, so you need to clear them before
the footer.
Another way to do it might be to add another div
just before the footer
Language: HTML
<div class="clear"></div>
With this in the stylesheet:
Language: CSS
.clear {clear: both;}
